Super Typhoon Haiyan brought flash floods, landslides and immense destruction to the Philippines. The storm, known locally as "Yolanda," was one of the most powerful on record. Thousands were killed, and 4 million people have been displaced, including 1.8 million children.

UNICEF estimates that 5.5 million of the 13.2 million people affected by the disaster are children.

UNICEF has been mobilizing all of its available resources to reach these children immediately. Immediately after the storm, staff rushed to deliver aid from prepositioned stock. UNICEF Supply Division airlifted water purification tablets, medical kits, tarpaulins, nutrition supplements and other essential goods from its warehouse in Copenhagen. Today, UNICEF is on the ground in Tacloban, Cebu, Roxas, Ormoc and elsewhere assessing needs and delivering aid.

Almost 200,000 people in storm-ravaged Tacloban now have access to safe drinking water. Tacloban will also be the starting point for a mass measles immunization campaign in coming weeks.

"We are working around the clock to find ways to get these supplies to children as quickly as conditions allow," says UNICEF Philippines Representative Tomoo Hozumi.

The Philippines has now endured three major crises in just two months: armed conflict in Zamboanga, the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Bohol and now, Super Typhoon Haiyan.
